Since 1956, Yuri’s works have been collected by all of the major museums in Russia. Karapaev is a dedicated adherent to the realistic landscape tradition of Russia which started in the late 19th Century and Russian art scholars regard him as the artistic heir to the great Russian landscape painter of the early 20th Century, Yuri Gorbatov.

At the age of 21, his work already housed in major museums, Karapaev received the title of, “Honored Artist”. Since that year, he has been invited every successive year to the annual National Exhibition of Honored Artists of the Soviet Union.

Born in the town of Klin, Russia, Yuri Karapaev graduated from the Fedoskino College of Arts in 1954. Fedoskino is best known for its renowned school of miniature lacquer boxes featuring realistic paintings. Karapaev began his career mastering this refined and delicate technique with consummate skill. He created over 100 famous original boxes painted with his intricate, finely detailed landscapes.

Karapaev’s ability to paint miniatures in such detail provided a natural foundation for the larger format on canvas. A keen observer of color and contrasting light, his works hold a mirror up to the unique and varied beauty of the Russian landscape.

Today, Yuri lives and works in Klin-Moscow region, his works popular the world over. He is represented exclusively in the United States by the Pushkin Gallery in Santa Fe and privately in Moscow where there is a waiting list to buy his paintings.
